Renters Insurance in Oklahoma

What is Renters Insurance?

Renters Insurance is a policy designed to protect your personal belongings while you are a tenant in a rental property. The landlord is responsible for insuring the actual property and the building itself. However, they do not own any of your belongings and are not responsible for protecting them with insurance.

Renters insurance will also provide liability coverage if you are responsible for injury or damage to other people or property. This includes damage or injury done by a pet or a family member who also lives with you.

If a disaster forces you out of your home, renters insurance can help pay your additional living expenses. If a covered loss renders your rental property uninhabitable, insurance can pick up hotel expenses, temporary rentals, meals, and other living expenses that could occur.

Some things to consider when looking for
Renters Insurance:

You’ll need to have an idea of how much coverage you need. Add up the cost of everything you would want replaced if it got damaged or stolen. It’s a good idea to keep a list of everything you would want to replace as an inventory in the event of a claim. Important information to include in an inventory would be model numbers, dates and places of purchase, and photos. This could make the process of filing a claim easier if that were to happen. Some ways of taking an inventory is to take pictures or make a video of everything you want to include. Store this video in a safe place in case you need it later for claim purposes.

As mentioned before, while your landlord might have insurance, it is strictly for the protection of the building itself and does not cover your belongings. It is important to make sure you have an adequate amount of coverage to protect yourself in the event of a disaster. Be sure to ask your agent for help with ensuring you have the coverage you need.
